WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH MEDICINE

Introduction

The Department of Public Health Medicine (PHM) – previously known as the Department of Population Health and Preventive Medicine (PHPM) – was established in 2003. The Department of PHM focuses on a range of teaching and learning activities of public health subjects, offering modules and courses for undergraduates and postgraduate students. The two postgraduate courses, Master of Public Health and Doctor of Public Health officially commenced in the year 2018.
 
Our vision is to establish the Department of PHM as a centre of excellence to produce competitive scholars and ethical leaders capable in promoting health and preventing diseases. The mission in turn is to enhance knowledge and expertise in public health through professional programmes, research activities and community engagement based on moral values and ethics. More specifically, the objectives of our department include:
 
  • To provide professionally recognised courses in Public Health.
  • To deliver high-quality and innovative methods of teaching and learning, and conduct studies that are relevant to current needs and in line with national policies and agenda.
  • To equip graduates with the rights skills to effectively address complex public health issues through contributions in the local and global workforce.
Our group is led by a head of department and assisted by academic staff with expertise in diverse public health subspecialities. At the moment, the department consists of the following units: Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Family Health, Environmental Health, Occupational Health, Health Management, and Health Promotion.
