STANDARDIZED PATIENTS

Introduction


Standardized Patients (SP) are individuals who participate in simulated doctor-patient encounters at the Clinical Simulation Centre (CSC), Faculty of Medicine, UiTM. It is introduced by the Department of Medical Education since year 2018. SP are individuals, with or without actual disease who have been trained to portray a medical case in a consistent manner.  SP are used in teaching and learning activities as well as in assessments for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students. Additionally, they facilitate practice in history taking, clinical techniques, communication and interpersonal skills. Although this is a relatively new to the faculty, SP has been used broadly and successfully by top medical schools worldwide.

Who Can Be Standardized Patient?


Almost anyone can be a Standardized Patient. We are looking for individuals who genuinely want to help students in Faculty of Medicine, UiTM to learn about medicine and who enjoy communication and interacting with people from various background.

Roles of Standardized Patient


  • Subject for history taking.
  • Subject for medical technique & procedures.
  • Subject for communication & interpersonal skills.

Standardized Patient Rules & Regulations


  • Standardized Patient must adhere to the scheduled time and present 30 minutes early before the session start.
  • Standardized Patient must sign a Pledge of Confidentiality and Consent to serve as Standardized Patient.
  • Standardized Patient must dress appropriately, neatly and in accordance with the sessions.
  • Standardized Patient with disciplinary issues will be immediately dismissed.

Standardized Patients Standard Operating Procedures


  • Standardized Patients application is open to all departments in Faculty of Medicine, UiTM.
  • Applicants must submit a request for the use of Standardized Patients  by filling out the Standardized Patient Request Form.
  • Applicants will receive a call from Standardized Patient unit staff within 2 (TWO) working days to notify about their application status.
  • Applications are valid for the use of Standardized Patients at CSC Sg. Buloh/ CSC Selayang/ CSC HASA from Monday to Thursday (8:00am until 5:00pm)
  • Minimum period of Standardized Patients  usage: 1.5 hours.
  • Application by lecturers only. However, application by students that are accompanied by respected lecturers’ approval will be accepted.
  • Application criteria’s that will not be approved:
    • Direct request without filling out the application form.
    • Late application.
    • Incomplete application information provided.
